As the wheel of the year turns, one of the most mystical nights approaches: Hekate’s Night on November 16. For witches and magickal practitioners, this is a time to honor the goddess Hekate, the keeper of keys, the guardian of crossroads, and the triple moon goddess. Read on to learn more about this most enchanting night.
Who is Hekate?
Hekate is an ancient goddess with roots in Greek mythology. She is often depicted holding torches, and keys, and is sometimes accompanied by black dogs. Hekate stands at the crossroads, literally and metaphorically, guiding those who seek her wisdom through traditions and transformations. Her torch of fire flickers with ancient wisdom, illuminating the shadows as it guides us through the night, urging us to embrace our inner power and discover the hidden truths that lie within. Hekate stands as the fierce protectress of the marginalized and oppressed, wrapping her dark cloak around those who have been silenced or cast aside. She embodies the strength of the unheard, reminding us that within the shadows lies our power to reclaim our voices and rise united in defiance against adversity. In her presence, we find the courage to embrace our truths and honor the sacred magic that flows through us all. She is also known as a protector of the home and the one who sees into the unseen realms. Hekate is not a figure associated with the devil or malevolence; instead, she embodies empowerment, wisdom, and the ability to navigate the mysteries of life, serving as a protector of witches and a guide through the shadows. In my practice, I refer to her as Mother of Witches partially because of her protective and fierce nature. Her connection to plants is profound, particularly those that are considered poisonous or protective. These plants reflect her role as a keeper of the boundaries between life and death, reminding us that danger and healing often reside side by side. Hekate embodies wisdom, intuition, and the duality of life and death.
The Significance of November 16
Hekate’s Night, or Hekate’s Supper, is traditionally celebrated on the night of November 16. This is a time when the veil between the worlds is thin, and the energy is ripe for deep magick and transformation. This date is significant within various pagan traditions as it is associated with the transition from autumn to winter, a period that invites introspection and connection with the unseen. November is also considered a time of honoring ancestors and those who have passed, which aligns with Hekate's role as a guide for souls and protector of magick. Celebrating Hekate's Night on this specific date allows practitioners to connect with her energies, reflecting on personal transformations while seeking her wisdom as they navigate the darker months ahead. It’s a powerful time to seek Hekate’s guidance, offer her devotion, and work on personal transformations. This mystical time is perfect for engaging in rituals of divination, shadow work, and working with our herbal allies. On this night, we are called to confront our fears and embrace the magick that dwells within us, inviting her guidance as we navigate the hidden paths of our lives.
Ways to Honor Hekate’s Night
Create an altar: Set up a sacred space with items representing Hekate – coins, black candles, keys, torches, and images of dogs, ravens, or owls. Add offerings such as honey, garlic, eggs, and wine.
Leaving offerings at the crossroads: On this night, it is tradition to leave an offering of honey, garlic, crescents, mushrooms, eggs, and wine at the crossroads. If you choose to do this do not look back after leaving the offering. This offering can be at your threshold to your home or at an actual crossroads where two roads intersect. Where paths meet signifies decisions, change, and transformation. In the context of Hekate, the crossroads represent the choices we face in life, as well as the interconnectedness of fate, and free will.
Offerings of the forgotten - In some traditions, it was customary to leave offerings, including discarded items and food, symbolizing the acknowledgment of the forgotten or marginalized. This act of remembrance aligns with her role as a protector of the oppressed and marginalized.
Meditation and Invocation – Spend time in meditation, calling upon Hekate. You might want to recite affirmations or chants to her. Visualize her standing at the crossroads, guiding you with her torches.
Divination and spellwork – Hekate is a goddess of prophecy. Use tools like tarot cards, runes, or scrying to seek her guidance on your path. Ask for her insight into any crossroads or decisions you face.
Shadow work – Hekate’s Night is ideal for shadow work. Delve into the parts of yourself that are hidden, bringing them into the light for healing and integration. Hekate’s energy can help you navigate this deep, often challenging process.
Community rituals – If you practice with a coven or group, consider performing a ritual together. A favorite ritual of mine on this night is the Khernips ritual of coming clean before the Goddess and is great to do before doing spellwork. Share your intentions, cast a circle, and invoke Hekate’s presence as you honor her and seek her guidance.
Craft protective amulets or charm bags - Mix herbs that evoke safety and banishment, such as Wolfsbane, and other protective herbs like juniper or rosemary. Keep these charm bags on your altar or carry them with you as a reminder of Hekate’s protection and strength.
